Therapeutic Riding Program

NEW Program at The Urban Farm

Therapeutic Riding at The Urban Farm Therapeutic riding uses equine-oriented activities for the purpose of contributing positively to the cognitive, physical, emotional, and social well-being of people with disabilities. People with physical, cognitive, emotional and social disabilities may use equine assisted activities – adapted as needed- as a recreation and leisure experience. The emphasis is on an enjoyable and relaxing experience that provides additional therapeutic benefits in the areas of socialization, posture, mobility, and an overall improved quality of life. Individuals may participate in horse-related activities to their maximum ability in an atmosphere of support, structure, and socialization for the primary purpose of the intrinsic enjoyment of the activity.

Lisa Love, NARHA certified therapeutic riding instructor, has a bachelor’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation from the University of Iowa and has worked with adults and children with disabilities since 1996. Lisa’s work encompasses several different areas from recreational integration to supported employment and managing a supported living facility. Lisa believes that every individual should live life to its fullest and therefore should have the opportunity to do it. Being a mother of 3, Lisa has truly learned the art of patience and the need for positive role models in children’s lives and uses this knowledge and understanding in her teaching. Since beginning her work at The Urban Farm teaching young children to ride horses, Lisa has fallen in love with the sport and has joined her two passions, therapeutic recreation and horseback riding, to teach therapeutic riding.
